St Jean Pied de Port
St Jean Pied de Port
To walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago and beyond to the sea, you just need to follow the waymarks. The most common mark is the "Coquille de St Jacques" - the sign of a cockle shell, like that on this fountain.

Another symbol is St James as a pilgrim holding a staff, like that in the clock tower. In this photo there are two marks, the fountain and the statue, and the way goes through the arch, and out of town. Even though it seems unlikely, St. James and Santiago are the same Saint. The following are all equivelent to "James" in other languages, Diego, Iago, Giacomo, Jacob, Xaime, Jacques, Hakop, Jakko, Jakue.

The "official" markers are usually some variant of the stylized cockle shell on the square plaque above. There is inconsistancy about the direction of the rays, so you have to evaluate all the evidence. Here the rays are pointing you in the direction you are to go.
